On the weekend of November 3-4 2012, 6 members of the Colgate Debate Team went to Burlington, Vermont to attend the 2012 edition of the Huber Debates at the University of Vermont. There were two teams that participated in the debates: Lorelai Avram ’16 and Melissa Haller ’16, and Takreem Riwan Siddiqui ’14 and Anindya Guha ’15. Jack Holland ’13 and Anna Proios ’16 went as judges.
There were six great rounds of debate with high quality teams from all over the United States. The teams debated motions such as “This House would ban employers from accessing the criminal records of prospective employees,” “This House would defriend Facebook friends who post offensive political views,” and “This House believes that newly emerged democracies should ban religious parties.”
Both Colgate teams did well, and the debaters and judges gained valuable experience for future tournaments.
