- Hobart and William Smith Colleges
During the weekend of September 15-16, a rather small number of Colgate debaters attended the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Fall Classic. Since we were just getting our feet wet for the year, we only sent two debating teams: Alexa Windsor ’13 and Jack Holland ’13 and Sebastian Chan ’14 and Maddie Allen ’16, and a judge: Lorelai Avram ’16.
The motions we faced were rather interesting. We had to argue for/against the use of torture by democratic regimes, the increase of human cognitive abilities using genetic manipulation, the ownership of handguns in the United States and the possibility of opting out of Social Security. Last, emotion for the foreign affairs fans: “Which is better: a nuclear-armed Iran, or a U.S. invasion of Iran?
In the semi-final and final rounds of the tournament we watched debates about whether gladiatorial mortal combat should be allowed as a professional sport, and whether fashion magazines are more harmful to women than pornographic magazines.
Overall, a great tournament to launch the 2012-13 Colgate Debate Season!
